“Underneath” | Acrylic on Wood | 36″ x 80″ | $995 | This painting started off as a very planned painting that I was going to call “Swine Flu”…It was planned…every day of my life is planned. I am a designer and therefore I plan out with very detail precision what my next assignment is. If I am doing a logo for a corporation, I sit in meetings where we work out the details of what the logo should be, then there are sketches and 12 different concepts, then 5 different revisions, then marketing takes it around to get different opinions and lawyers make sure it can be copyrighted and trademarked. “And I’m planning a painting?”

Why would I do this. After watching a documentary on Warhol…well, he planned his paintings very detailed, So I thought I would but it wasn’t right for me. It didn’t work at all,I drew out the shapes of the pigs flying on the computer then took them down to the copy shop and reproduced them and blew them up and spaced them correctly then painted them out. I knew it wasn’t working before I even added the lines but I kept going. It took me two weeks to finish this painting because I couldn’t get past the starkness of it.

It needed life and I believe that I found it. I added color to the top of it and now it works. In fact I am glad that I planned it out, because I love the lines showing through it. The detail of the lines contrast the fluidness of the paint above it. What makes it work is “Underneath” the paint. I may continue this way, planning out the base of my paintings only to jerk the plan away for the spontaneity of the freedom of the brush or knife.

I guess it could be under water or out in space.

Thanks Mom…It’s different I know…but it’s me. When you see it up close the lines underneath come out so much better…
