It was reported by Mashable.com that Apple has purchased lala.com for a reported 80 million dollars, and now it seems that Apple has some real plans for this site. In fact it would make sense that Apple has plans to begin the process of bringing Itunes to the web.
Lala.com is the perfect choice for this. It already feels like Itunes and it allows you to upload or “match” up your music collection to the cloud so that you can stream your music library online. I tried it today and matched up already over 1,700 songs. What really made me giddy was the ability to go search for music that I love….add it to the que (then I could sample the entire song, not just 30 seconds). I felt like it was pandora and last.fm combined together but with the ability to control what I wanted to precisely listen to.
After I had sampled a couple of songs, I then hit “ADD” this to my online library and now I can listen to an entire 10 song CD of Scottish Bagpipes (Sorry Nathan, I can’t get over it!), all for just $1.00 which I didn’t have to pay for because lala.com gave me 25 credits ($2.50) but enough to allow me to add 25 songs to my online libary. I can assure you I will be adding another $10 to my wallet(which is how you fund your lala account), and will allow me to download an astounding 100 songs and play them forever online.
If Apple plans on integrating this into Itunes or turning Itunes “Online” into lala, I don’t know but I think it could be a game changer. All I know is I am sold. Now if they will just launch the Iphone App, I can just unload my entire iphone worth of music and stream all my songs directly from lala, because I hate updating my iphone anyway.
Okay Apple! What’s going on here? When are you going to let us know… Maybe MacWorld in February, 2010?

This is what I’ve been using GrooveShark for. I’m not sure that you can upload your iTunes library to it, but I don’t mind updating my iPhone so I’ve never even thought of doing that. If you’re wanting to listen to music online though, it’s the way to go. You can add a whole slew of bagpipe God-forsakeness until your little heart’s content:

I guess I have a hard time paying any money just to stream something online, especially when there are services out there that’ll let you do it for free.
They actually built a Grooveshark app for the iPhone, but the App store has killed its entry so far. I think any free, on-demand type music service is going to have a hard time making it, unfortunately.
I think this may be why Apple has not allowed anyone like grooveshark so far to create a app like this because they loose control of the music. I listen to pandora for the most part, and because of that I believe that Apple loses revenue. So I think that they are looking for a way for them to have that streaming service but still be able to control it. You can listen to any song in the library once, then only a thirty second sample, After that if you want to continue to listen to it, just pay .10 to listen to it forever. So if they add a application to the app store that allows you to access those .10 songs, then why ever purchase them.
As far as listening to it free online, I agree Grooveshark is a better option, but I think Apple will work to integrate this service to allow you to basically have an 8gb iphone but have a 30gb library streamed through your lala app. It will be interesting to see…
Yeah, it’s interesting for sure and I like the technology behind it, but when there are others that do the same thing for free, it’s a tough sell. And personally, I just can’t over the part where I don’t actually own the song and can’t take it with me on the go unless I’m somewhere where I can stream it… which as you know, the 3G network around here is a bit shoddy at best.
The stranglehold Apple puts on app developers is tough for sure… I wonder if that’ll loosen if someone ever manages to make a competitive phone with looser restrictions. Who knows…
