This project was just recently launched at the first of June 2010. However I designed this site at the end of 2009. The Blood Connection’s main goal in this project was to reflect the new look of their recently completed Woodruff Road Donation Center (a project I was also extensively involved in). The entire site revolves around the new for 2010 tagline “We Naturally Connect lives.”

It was my task to create a site that would evoke this natural feel and yet separate the different sections of the site using colors that were incorporated into the new donor center.

This site is 100% managed by the open source content management system WordPress which allows the client to completely manage all aspects of this site including top to bottom level navigation.

Client: Drum Creative for GreenvilleRec | Photoshop, WordPress and CSS, with jquery

My goal in designing this site was to achieve a fun but up to date look with a 2.0 web feel. We also implemented multiple templates to engage the user when viewing a special department or location of the site that should receive special recognition (.ie waterpark, ice skating rink, etc)

“We are excited to announce the launch of the new GreenvilleRec.com website this morning. Some of the features of the new site include a park locator, a Twitter feed displaying field closings and conditions, targeted zones for advertising, multiple templates that compliment the look of several parks and an overall dynamic structure. At the time of the launch, the website weighs in at right around 260 pages. With a content-managed back end, we expect that number to continue to grow.

With the improvements in usability, design and the dynamic nature of the site, we expect that GreenvilleRec.com will see 1 million visits this year.” – Drum Creative

I am greatful to have been a part of this project. I started working with the Greenville County Recreation District over 9 years ago doing small print jobs for them and producing a 4 times a year overview brochure.

In 2004 I was asked if I could help them out with their website. At that time I was programming completely in tables and html without any knowledge of css or backend cms. I hand coded over 70 pages and implemented an open source very limited cms that worked at that time. In the 3 years that gcrd.org has been running we have increased the visitors from approx. 40 per month to an average of 1,500 per day and expect to hit more than 1 million visitors this year.

When the call came to redesign the site, I was naturally to be considered to redesign the site but we had to do our homework to prove that we could take on the challenge of re-programming the site. Jim Ferguson who came on board with Drum Creative in 2008 was confident that we could produce a very dynamic, user friendly and extensive cms using WordPress.

Melissa Ringler a good friend of mine approached me the beginning of December to see if I would be interested in working on a website for her blacksmith business. She brought me a number of jewelry pieces that she had hammered out and WOW was I blown away by what she could do. The color in these pieces are natural from the heat that is applied to the metal.

I am now in the process of finishing up the programming on this site. It is a ecommerce site built on cube cart version 4 open source platform. Well it’s not so open source anymore (version 3 still is) but still a great platform. Check it out at magicmetalsltd.com
